Happy Thorsday and Summer Solstice! This week we’re reading The Mighty Thor [The Book Depository] [Waterstones], and discovering the worse side of Odin. Although we’ve seen Odin having a bright side, in this series he’s the Douche of always. But before we explore the All-Father, let’s talk about Thor. We left Jane falling after an explosion with Loki staring from afar. Fortunately, she’s able to call Mjolnir back and shift to her godly figure before anyone saw her.
Malekith seems to be winning, and that’s why the Queen of the Light Elves, Aelsa, steps up to gain some time for her people. While Malekith and the Queen talk piece without the presence of Thor, Loki ends up in chains and waiting next to Thor. Loki seems quite comfortable in chains as if he had a different plan in mind.
Loki always brings some laughter in the comics. In this case, he greets his Dad, and then he greets Odin in the same mocking fashion. But before that happens, we learn about the trickery of Malekith. He doesn’t want peace, but to marry the Queen. Apparently, she doesn’t want to do that. That’s why Malekith uses The Enchantress to trick the Queen and bewitch her. By the time they meet with Thor again, the battle is lost. So, Malekith wins the Light Elves world by using a cruel war and then bewitching the Queen to marry him.
Thor wants to make things right, but there’re more urgent matters back in Asgard as Malekith points out. Odin is holding a trial to punish his wife. Lady Freyja is in chains in the fashion we saw Loki in Thor the Dark World. She accuses Odin of being a tyrant and Odin loses it. He wants her in a cage, and to crush the rebellion.
Odin has put Heimdall in jail, and now Frandall and company are trying to stop the trial. They’re fighting to get in the hall. They argue that all this ill-doing is because Odin’s brother, the Serpent, has bewitched him. [I’m not so sure about that. Odin isn’t exactly a nice fellow. He has a nasty side, and it’s showing up a lot when he’s arguing with his wife.]
Lady Freyja wounds Odin’s ego so much that he’s going to kill her as punishment. But, when he’s about to kill her, Thor appears from nowhere with a flash of light, accompanied by Loki. Loki’s teleportation skills have helped the duo a lot. The funny thing is that while Thor is ready to fight Odin, Loki is just greeting his father with a “hi, Other-Daddy!”
And while Thor and Odin are about to clash in a battle, Loki and Lady Freyja are in a side, in chains and talking. Loki tells her mother that, they have matching chains. Very much like they were just commenting on fashion tendencies. And Lady Freyja just says that Loki being there is not according to plan!
So, Loki is working for the All-Mother again. Or, so it looks like from their conversation. As for the plans, poor Loki complains about Thor. Have you ever known a Thor to follow plans? They’re all about hammering things, right?
This issue brings us Odin in his full Douche glory. He does look like Anthony Hopkins. It feels a little bit strange for me to see that most of the characters look a lot like the actors of the MCU. Don’t get me wrong, it’s cool. But I personally prefer the comic-like features that Lee Garbett gave them in Loki Agent of Asgard.
That being said, let’s stop for a while and admire the artwork. I love the game with the panels. It looks dynamic and very engaging. The color palette and the fighting scenes are also fantastic. All in all, this is a great masterpiece. It’s witty, funny, and artistically excellent.
What’s Malekith up to in The Mighty Thor [The Book Depository] [Waterstones]? Why is Odin more irrational than usual? I can’t wait to see Thor beating Odin and discovering what’s going on. Also, I want to know what was Loki’s and Freyja’s original plan. What do you think will happen next?
